Why accurate dog robe measurements matter
A drying robe works best when it covers the wet areas without restricting normal movement. If it is too small, the lining may not reach enough of the back and sides, the neck can feel tight and the belly strap may pull. If it is too large, the robe can rotate, drag or bunch around the legs. Breed labels and body weight are useful clues, but neither replaces a tape measure because dogs of the same breed can have very different proportions.
FrostPet robes use a wraparound shape with an absorbent lining, so the goal is comfortable contact rather than a skin-tight fit. Measure your dog while standing naturally on a level floor. Use a soft sewing tape and keep it flat against the coat without compressing thick fur. If your dog is between sizes, compare all three measurements and prioritize chest room and back coverage.
The three measurements you need
Start with back length. Place the tape where the neck meets the shoulders and measure along the spine to the base of the tail. Do not begin at the collar high on the neck, and do not include the tail. Keep your dog looking forward so the back is in a neutral position.
Next, measure chest girth around the widest part of the rib cage, usually just behind the front legs. Pass the tape under the chest and over the back. You should be able to slide two fingers beneath it. Finally, measure around the lower neck where the robe will sit. Record every number in inches or centimeters and use one unit consistently.
- Back length: shoulder base to tail base
- Chest girth: widest part behind the front legs
- Lower neck: around the base of the neck
- Optional: record weight only as a secondary check
FrostPet seven-size dog robe chart
Use the chart below as the starting point, then compare your dog's shape with the product photos. The available range is XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL and 2XL. A 3XL row may appear on an older reference image, but 3XL is not currently offered. Because body shapes vary, the best size is the one that accommodates the largest relevant measurement without excessive extra fabric.
If the back length suggests one size and the chest suggests the next size up, choose the larger size in most cases. A slightly longer robe can still dry effectively, while a tight chest reduces comfort and adjustability. Long, narrow breeds may need more back coverage; broad-chested breeds often need more room around the rib cage.

How to check the fit when the robe arrives
Slip the robe over your dog's head, smooth it along the back and fasten the wrap without pulling. The neckline should lie flat, the back panel should point toward the tail and the dog should be able to walk, sit and turn comfortably. Check that the edges do not interfere with the front or rear legs.
Supervise the first few wears. A correct robe should stay reasonably centered during calm movement and should not cause your dog to freeze, scratch continuously or try to chew it. Remove the robe if your dog seems uncomfortable. A drying robe is for supervised drying and comfort, not unsupervised confinement or vigorous play.
Measure once more before ordering
Take a clear side photo while your dog is standing after you record the numbers. The photo helps you remember coat length, body shape and exactly where the tape sat. Do not estimate from a curled sleeping position or measure over clothing. For fluffy dogs, smooth the coat without pressing it flat, then repeat the chest measurement to confirm it is consistent.
Coat length, grooming and age can change a dog's measurements. Recheck growing puppies and dogs whose coat has recently been clipped. Write the date next to the measurements so you know whether they are current. Measuring twice takes only a minute and prevents many avoidable size exchanges.
Once you have the numbers, explore all FrostPet dog robes and choose the print that suits your routine. Every current print uses the same seven-size system, so you can focus on fit first and design second.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions
What if my dog is between two robe sizes?
Choose the larger size when the chest or neck is close to the upper limit, especially for broad-chested dogs. Comfortable movement is more important than a tight fit.
Can I choose a dog robe size by weight?
Weight is only a secondary guide. Back length, chest girth and lower-neck circumference provide a more reliable fit.
How tight should a dog drying robe be?
It should make gentle contact with the coat while allowing two fingers at the neck and easy walking, sitting and turning.
